Oral communication is a process of sharing information and intended meaning, both knowingly and unknowingly, that requires the verbal response of a receiver.

As an ongoing process, oral communication involves an exchange of information between speakers and listeners in which those roles are shared.

The Oral Communication Process

The major components of the oral communication process are:
  1. The speaker,
  2. The message,
  3. The channel,
  4. The listener(s),
  5. Feedback,
  6. Distractions, and
  7. The communication environment

The speaker

Oral communication begins with a speaker who is the source of a message. The speaker can be anyone. The speaker has an idea or information that needs to be shared with others.

The listener

The listener is the person to whom the message is directed. The speaker must take the listener into account when encoding the message and selecting the channel for transmission.

Selection of symbois

The symbols you select to convey the message can be verbal (spoken or written words), nonverbal (facial expressions, gestures, and physical movements), or a verbal-nonverbal combination.

The channel

The connecting device between the speaker and the uistener(s) is the channel through which the message is sent.
