 Managerial Roles

Mintzberg organized his typology of managerial roles into three major categories, each of which contains specific roles. There are 10 such roles in this system, as shown in the next figure, which are described in the following sections.
The three major categories of managerial roles are:
  1. Interpersonal roles.
  2. Informational roles.
  3. Decisional roles.

Interpersonal Roles

Interpersonal Roles: Roles managers assume to coordinate and interact with employees and provide direction to the organization.
In fulfilling the interpersonal role of management, managers perform three interpersonal sub-roles:
  1. Figurehead role: symbolizes the organization and what it is trying to achieve.
  2. Leader role: train, counsel, mentor and encourage high employee performance.
  3. Liaison role: link and coordinate people inside and outside the organization to help achieve goals.

Informational Roles

Informational Roles: Associated with the tasks needed to obtain and transmit information for management of the organization.
In fulfilling the informational roles of management, managers perform three informational roles:
  1. Monitor role: analyzes information from both the internal and external environment.
  2. Disseminator role: manager transmits information to influence attitudes and behavior of employees.
  3. Spokesperson role: use of information to positively influence the way people in and out of the organization respond to it.

Decisional Roles

Decisional Roles: Associated with the methods managers use to plan strategy and utilize resources to achieve goals. Managers engage in four decisional subroles.
  1. Entrepreneur role: deciding upon new projects or programs to initiate and invest.
  2. Disturbance handler role: assume responsibility for handling an unexpected event or crisis.
  3. Resource allocator role: assign resources between functions and divisions, set budgets of lower managers.
  4. Negotiator role: seeks to negotiate solutions between other managers, unions, customers, or shareholders.
